The Dolphin Aquatic club got its start in 1958 at the Military Radar base in Sudbury, Ontario Canada. Membership back then was approximately 35 members with roots to the military. The training was carried out at the base for a number of years. Courses started in September and continued until April and included Bronze Cross training (We provided lifeguards for the courses and radar base) the Bronze Cross certification ended in January and the scuba course started in January and ran until April with open water checkouts taking place on the May long weekend. The closing of the radar base forced the relocation of training to the R.C. Dow pool in Copper Cliff and finally to the Laurentian University pool. Today we enjoy a membership of approximately 100 to 150 members a year and train in excess of 30 new recruits every year. Some of our members were part of OUC board of directors and ACUC board of directors and were instrumental in the development of the Fathom Five dive sanctuary in Tobermory, they also helped preserve the Sweepstake in Little Tub Harbour. The club for many years did the police search and rescue, cleaned public beaches and many other community services. It is one of the largest diving clubs in Ontario. The Dolphin Aquatic Club is a non-profit club, therefore all monies collected from the training of new recruits is used to pay pool fees and certification. All other money collected by the club is re-invested in insurance fees , instructor certifications, yearly operation, equipment maintenance and diving excursions. We are one of the few clubs in Ontario to possess portable and stationary air compressors that are available to our members once they have completed free training on the operation of the units. |

Fathom Five— The deep and sparkling waters at the mouth of Georgian Bay are home to Fathom Five - Canada's first National Marine Conservation Area. The park preserves a rich cultural legacy that includes 22 shipwrecks and several historic light stations. Fathom Five’s freshwater ecosystem contains some of the most pristine waters of the Great Lakes. The rugged islands of the park are a reminder of the impressive lakebed topography found beneath the waves. |
