Gear Gear Gear

Now that you new divers have passed your exams and are looking to buy your gear, or you weathered divers are looking at upgrading that shrinking wet suit, not so dry dry suit, duct taped mask or leaking regs,  where do you go?  Here is a list of a few places to look.

First off and highly recommended would be Gerry LaVigne at CANDIVE Scuba School and Supply on The Kingsway in Sudbury.  Gerry has long been a friend of the Sudbury Dolphins, offers a discount to Club members and often donates his services to support our club.  He carry's a good assortment of stock, and can order in pretty much anything you are looking for if he doesn’t already have it.  Gerry's shop is located in Sudbury and will occasionally flex his hours to accommodate you if you call ahead and ask nicely.  Keep in mind that although the prices down south or on the internet may seem very competitive, when you add in the cost of gas, the time to get there, or the shipping, as well as taking into account the yearly shipping for service on your gear, you will find that Gerry really is more competitive that you think.

As for those of you who do wish to venture to Southern Ontario to do your shopping, here are a couple of shops that come highly recommended (in alphabetical order).

Aquarius Scuba located in Mississauga has a very large stock of equipment, offer good pricing, are very friendly to deal with, give good discounts on packages, and have excellent turn around time on shipped orders and equipment service.  Make sure to ask for Guy or Peter and tell them Dave from Sudbury sent you.  Both of these guys are great to deal and have vast experience diving around the world.  Aquarius Scuba also arranges live aboard dive vacations each year to some place warm, see their web site for more details.

A number of our club members have been dealing and diving with Dan and his crew at Dans Dive Shop in St. Catherines for many years, and his shop comes highly recommended.  Dans shop has two dive charters, holds many events, is located close to many excellent dive sites and is listed as Canada’a oldest PADI Dive Centre. His shop carries a large amount of stock, offers a wide range of services, has good pricing, good service, and great people.   Dans is both a sport dive shop and a community dive shop,  getting involved with and donating to many local events, charities, and schools.  Please take the time to check out and read their web site.

An important thing to remember is that your equipment needs to be serviced each year including a visual inspection of your tank each year and a hydrostatic test every 5 years.  You are not to fill your tanks if you have not had these inspections done.  Each of the shops above will do a Visual for a fee, and some will do hydro and even eddy current inspections.  Locally you can take your tanks to Fire Check on Lorne St. to have these done.  Remember to tell them you are with the Dolphins as they offer a 10% discount for active club members.

Now that you have this list, how do you decide what to buy?  The best advice is to talk with other divers and read reviews on the internet.  A couple of the above listed shops also have discussion forums on their sites, or you could join a free site such as www.scubaboard.com .   Also, take the time to go to  www.scubadiving.com , a service of Scuba Diving magazine.  Here you will find equipment reviews, and information on pretty much everything related to diving.

This is just a small list Steve put together with input from a few club members, so if anyone has any information they would like to add to the above, or has a favorite shop they feel the club should know about, please email Dave Younger  at dsquaredb@cyberbeach.net  , and let us know what the shop is, why you think they should make the list and any contact information you can provide.
